A Sunny Pause in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
There are cities you pass through, and then there are cities that wrap you in sunshine the moment you arrive. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is firmly in the second camp — a breezy Atlantic capital where the days drift by in warm colours and the evenings hum with easygoing charm.
We landed with no grand plan beyond sun, sea, and a bit of wandering, and Las Palmas delivered all three before lunchtime. Las Canteras Beach became our unofficial headquarters — a long sweep of golden sand where the Atlantic rolls in gently, as if it knows we’re not in the mood for drama. Jane claimed her patch of sunshine instantly, settling in with that “I could live here” look she gets whenever the temperature hits the sweet spot.
Away from the beach, Vegueta pulled us into its maze of cobbled lanes and pastel‑coloured houses. There’s something grounding about walking through a place that’s been standing since the 1400s — the cathedral rising above the square, the balconies leaning over the narrow streets, the quiet corners where time seems to slow down. We wandered, we photographed, we found tapas that made us consider staying another night.
Evenings in Las Palmas have their own rhythm. The harbour glows, the air cools just enough, and the city feels like it’s exhaling. We sat by the waterfront watching cruise ships glide in, each one carrying its own set of stories, while we added another chapter to ours.
Las Palmas isn’t a city that demands anything from you. It simply offers sunshine, colour, and a gentle reminder that life is better when you let the day unfold at its own pace. For two Nomads who’ve learned to savour the journey, it was exactly the kind of stop we love - warm, welcoming, and wonderfully unhurried.
